There is oil in the cooling water. What does that mean?
The two circuits are connected, through a cracked plate or a failed gasket seal. The unit needs to come off line and each side pressure tested separately, because testing both together hides the fault.
Does an oil duty need a different gasket?
Yes. Gasket material is matched to the fluid, and a material that suits heating water will not necessarily suit oil at temperature. Fitting the same specification that failed repeats the failure.
Can the unit be cleaned rather than repaired?
If the problem is fouling and lost duty, cleaning is usually the answer. If the two fluids are mixing, cleaning does not address the cause.
