Heat exchanger repairs at Grangemouth serve Scotland's industrial centre on the Forth, now working through the largest change to its plant population in decades.
- Refining ended in April 2025
- Petroineos ceased crude processing at Grangemouth and converted the site to an import terminal, bringing in petrol, diesel and aviation fuel through the Firth of Forth. Around fifty million pounds went into that conversion. Checked 1 September 2026.
- A much smaller workforce on that site
- Headcount at the refinery fell from roughly 475 to around 75 through the transition. A terminal is not a refinery, and the exchanger population on that particular site is a fraction of what it was.
- Terminal and tank farm duties remain
- Import terminals still carry heat transfer plant. Product heating, utility duties and the exchangers behind pumping and storage operations do not disappear because refining has, though they are fewer and generally smaller.

- Grangemouth sits in a broader industrial belt, and the site's own future options under assessment include a biorefinery, sustainable aviation fuel and low carbon hydrogen. Any of those would bring new heat transfer plant with it.

Is there still heat exchanger work at Grangemouth?
Less than there was, and it would be misleading to say otherwise. Refining stopped in April 2025 and the site now operates as an import terminal, so the population of process exchangers on it has reduced substantially. Terminal, storage and utility duties continue, and the wider Forth industrial area is unaffected by the refinery decision.
What happens if the site is redeveloped?
The options being assessed include a biorefinery, sustainable aviation fuel and low carbon hydrogen. Each of those brings heat transfer plant of its own, and new plant needs maintaining from the day it is commissioned. None of it is committed yet, so it is a prospect rather than a plan.
